How important is a resume in a child's portfolio?

If there are speaking roles I refer to a resume - if not I cast on intuition and performance.

Do you think a showreel is a good idea for a child?

Always - it shows how the child is in front of the camera and how a role is portrayed, but the deciding factor when selecting someone would not be the availability of a showreel.

Any tips on the best way for a child or a parent to behave during casting?

Please don't come into the actual casting session with your child and try to direct them in front of me. When discussing the casting before the session with your child, encourage them to be themselves (after all we are often looking for distinctive genuine attributes).
